I know Brittany and parts of Normandy have a lot of standing stones (menhirs) but the countryside here looks more English. So where are they? I love standing stones and wonder what sort of lives those who erected them really led and what inspired them to erect such huge stones. Fascinating.
It is Avebury in Wiltshire, the stones surround the more modern village and are intertwined with the buildings. It is a very lovely place, very strange.

Thanks – they look bigger than they are really, we were at Avebury on a very muddy day, the stones are amazing.

Avebury – they look enormous here but are maybe not quite so large – the perspective of the photo makes them look bigger.
